Thirty kills, one assist, one service ace, six digs, 18 blocks, and 42 points in just 14 sets. This is senior Lorin Thomas’ record thus far this season.

Thomas is a 6-foot-2 middle blocker from Raleigh who has been playing volleyball for 10 years and playing for Campbell for the past three. She has been an all-tournament player at the 2013 William & Mary Invitational, all-tournament at this year’s North Carolina Central University Invitational (which Campbell won) and most recently, she was named Big South Defensive Player of the Week.

“She is the most physical player on our roster,” said head coach Greg Goral. “And she will be an important part of our success this fall.”

Thomas was vital in the Lady Camels’ 3-0 start to the season at the NCCU Invitational in Durham. Eleven of her 18 blocks came at key moments during Campbell’s close 3-2 victory over Valparaiso.

She said she hopes the good start will lead to big things this season as the Lady Camels work toward their Big South Conference schedule.

“Our main focus right now should be to control our side of the court, keep our energy up and play hard to earn every point,” Thomas said.

Teammate Jessica Groen referred to Thomas as a “phenomenal volleyball player and a huge asset to this team.”

“She is a go-to middle and we really rely on her presence,” Groen said.

In addition to her athletic prowess, Thomas has become a leader and quality teammate to younger players like Summer Schuiema.

“She is one of the most genuine girls I have ever met,” said Schuiema. “She always encourages the team no matter the situation. I love playing with her.”

“She is a very caring teammate, more like a mom at times,” added Goral. “She has grown into a strong leader as well. When we are struggling she has the ability to help people focus on accomplishing our goals.”

Thomas said she’s excited to be working with new players and is still humbled and grateful to be able to play volleyball on the college level.

She’s saddened to be in her final year, but Thomas said she plans to cherish each day and each chance she has to be on the court. A 3-2 business major looking to earn her MBA with a concentration in marketing, Thomas said she plans to job hunt and travel after her final year and graduation, but she wants to keep volleyball in her life.

“I don’t know what my life is without it,” she explained. “I may coach a high school or club team in the future.”

Thomas and the rest of the Campbell team will host the University of South Carolina at Gore Arena on Sept. 12.
